About Poliventure!

 Poliventure! is a workshop series that explores how games relate to concepts in political science. Dr. Franco will be livestreaming games, such as Catan Universe, Risk! Board Game, and Sid Meier's Civilization, and discussing how different elements of the game relate to political science.

FA21: Week 1: "The 7 Concepts"

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • List the 7 concepts.
  • Identify two values of each concept.
  • Explain how a concept can be operationalized.
  • Describe how concepts can be illustrated by games.

FA21: Week 2: "Communication"

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Define communication
  • Explain how communication occurs in a game.
  • Explain how communication occurs with a real-life political example.

FA21: Week 3: "Information"

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Define information.
  • Explain how information occurs in a game.
  • Explain how information occurs with a real-life political example.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Define strategy.
  • Explain how strategy occurs in a game.

SU21: Week 1: "Overview"

Poliventure! is a workshop series that explores how games relate to concepts in political science. I will be livestreaming games, such as Risk Board Game and Sid Meier's Civilization, and discussing how different elements of the game relate to political science.

SU21: Week 2: "Risk!"

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Recall the four concepts of communication, information, strategy, and moves.
  • Apply at least one of the four concepts to a specific game or versions of a game.

SU21: Week 3: "Networks"

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Define network theory
  • Explain what a network is
  • Apply network analysis to the game of Risk!

SU21: Week 4: “Settlers of Catan"

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Apply the concept of the network to a popular board game: Settlers of Catan.
  • Describe how a network, whether simple or complex, makes the overall game more complex.

SU21: Week 5: “Randomness and Probability"

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Define randomness and probability.
  • Explain how randomness and probability are related.
  • Apply randomness and probability to the game of Catan Universe.

SU21: Week 6: “Signals and Bluffs"

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Define signals and bluffs.
  • Explain how signals and bluffs are related.
  • Apply signals and bluffs to the game of Stratego.

SU21: Week 7: “Real World Applications 1"

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • List the 7 concepts.
  • Apply at least 3 of the concepts to the real-world.
  • Explain the utility of applying concepts to the real-world.

SU21: Week 8: “Real World Applications 2"

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • List the 7 concepts.
  • Apply the concepts to real-world politics.
