About May It Please the Court

“May It Please the Court” is a workshop series that is focused on exploring the interaction between the U.S. Supreme Court and federal, state, and/or local policy and political institutions, actors, and behaviors.

Fall 2021: 8 Videos

Week 1: "Overview of the Federal Judiciary"

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Explain the Role and Structure of the Courts
  • Define the Judicial Conference of the United States
  • Describe at least one difference between the Federal and State Courts

Week 2: "The U.S. Supreme Court: Membership, Docket, Cases, Amicus Curiae Briefs, and Oral Arguments "

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Identify the Membership of the Supreme Court
  • Define docket, cases, amicus curiae briefs
  • Explain oral arguments and opinions

Week 3: “Case 1: Mississippi v. Tennessee”

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Describe a mind map model for a case
  • Explain the difference between a Petitioner and Respondent
  • Identify the Facts of the Case
  • Identify the Question(s) of the Case

Week 4: “Case 1” Continued

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Describe a mind map model for a case
  • Explain the difference between a Petitioner and Respondent
  • Identify the Facts of the Case
  • Identify the Question(s) of the Case

Week 5: “Case 1” Concluded

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
